Abacus Consulting and Evaluation Services (Abacus) is a Research Service Center within the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Abacus specializes in collaborating with health and human service organizations with a mission to foster innovation and advance equity in research and health outcomes through evaluation. Dr. Dave, MD, DrPH, MPH, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Associate Director of the Center for Health Equity Research, is the Director of Abacus. Abacus’ leadership consists of experienced evaluators who maintain currency with state-of-art research and evaluation methods. Abacus employs various quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches to address research and evaluation questions identified in its portfolio of projects.

This Associate Director of Evaluation will report directly to Dr. Dave. This position will primarily lead the day-to-day oversight and management of the portfolio of evaluation projects and the teams working on these projects. They will work with Abacus senior personnel to 1) oversee the development of evaluation plans for new projects, ensuring high-quality standards for data collection, analysis, and reporting of project outcomes and impacts; 2) work with potential partners and collaborators in building program-specific evaluation plans and tools; 3) lead or co-lead strategic planning activities related to Abacus; 4) represent Abacus at national evaluation workgroups and activities; 5) drive the development of new project/contract/grant opportunities; 6) catalyze a data-driven decision making culture across Abacus.

The Associate Director of Evaluation will plan, develop, and implement Abacus’ core mission strategies, including overseeing the development of processes for capturing data used to evaluate performance effectiveness and track progress among the various projects in the Abacus portfolio. They will oversee the development and implementation of evaluation objectives, design, and data collection procedures for Abacus projects (e.g., Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics in Underserved Population) in collaboration with Abacus team members and evaluation and data specialists. The successful candidate will provide their expertise in evaluation science, research, and innovative methods. They will work with the Abacus team members to design evaluation plans, collect and analyze evaluation data, produce periodic reports to meet aims, and communicate accurate evaluation findings to partners and clients. They will serve as the primary contact for all new project/contract/grant opportunities and represent Abacus at local, national, and international meetings. They will supervise and manage a team of evaluation program managers and evaluation specialists in Abacus.
