August 29, 2022

To: Members of the American Economic Association
From: Peter L. Rousseau, Secretary-Treasurer
Subject: Annual Meeting Registration and Other Announcements

The Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 6-8, 2023. The meeting will be in-person. Registration and exhibits will take place in the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. General meeting information is available on the AEA website at https://www.aeaweb.org/conference.

Individuals unable to attend in-person will be able to view selected AEA live-streamed sessions for free. Presenters and discussants on the program who have health concerns will have an option to present their talks remotely. Details about the remote presentation option will be sent directly to those on the program shortly. Please note that there will be no Zoom-based option for remote audiences.

All registrants will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and to have received at least one booster to attend the meeting. High-quality masks (i.e., KN-95 or better) will be required in all indoor conference spaces. These requirements are planned for the well-being of all participants.  Participants are also encouraged to test for COVID-19 before traveling to the meeting.

Meeting registration opens on September 6, 2022. To complete your registration, you will be required to acknowledge and accept the AEA Code of Professional Conduct and AEA Policy on Harassment and Discrimination. You will also need to upload proof of your FDA-approved vaccination and booster. After your proof of vaccination is verified, you will receive an email with a housing link which allows you to book a room. Housing opens on September 13, 2022.

The preliminary program is posted at https://www.aeaweb.org/conference/2023/preliminary. To keep up to date on the meeting, follow us on Twitter @ASSAMeeting.

We look forward to reconnecting with colleagues and old friends after two long years of remote meetings!

The AEA's 2023 Continuing Education Program will be held on January 8-10, 2023, at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel.  For more information and updates, visit https://www.aeaweb.org/conference/cont-ed/.

Job Market Interviews have always been a central part of the ASSA Annual Meeting but will occur online once again for 2023. We hope that you will continue to take advantage of the JOE Network for your candidate profiles, job listings, and letter writing, as well as the application module that includes a tool for scheduling interviews. The AEA will continue to provide Signaling and the Job Market Scramble. The AEA Committee on the Job Market offers periodic updates on conditions in the job market, and has issued guidance and a timeline for the 2022-23 economics job cycle. Visit https://www.aeaweb.org/joe/communications for details and other updates.

2022-23 Minority Job Market Candidates. The Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession (CSMGEP) maintains a web page listing of 2022-23 minority job market candidates as a resource for employers. If you identify as American Indian, Alaskan Native, Black (not of Hispanic origin), Hispanic (including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American origin), or Pacific Islander and would like to be added to this list, please email Dr. Gary A. Hoover at ghoover@tulane.edu.

The AEA Ombudsperson is available and ready to assist members. The AEA has engaged Leto Copeley in this critical role. As an attorney, Copeley will maintain information received with the utmost confidentiality possible. The ombudsperson is a resource for addressing issues of harassment and discrimination throughout the profession. Any AEA member is eligible to consult with the ombudsperson on matters involving harassment or discrimination in a professional context. For more information, visit https://www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/aea-ombudsperson.

Erzo F.P. Luttmer, Incoming Editor of the American Economic Review seeks nominations for coeditors or board members for the journal. Nominations that diversify the current board and team of coeditors are especially welcomed. For more details and to submit nominations by September 30, 2022, visit https://www.aeaweb.org/journals/aer/about-aer/editorial-nominations.

AEA Mentoring Program. In the mid-1990s, the CSMGEP created a Mentoring Program for students accepted or enrolled in a Ph.D. program in economics. Since then the program has expanded to include new doctorates as well. Students are matched with mentors who see the students through the critical junctures of their graduate programs (including the transition from course work to research) or the early stages of their post-graduate careers. The Mentoring Program also hosts an annual Summer Mentoring Pipeline Conference to which all participants and their mentors are invited. The conference, which is held each year at the AEA Summer Training Program, facilitates contacts among minority students in different schools and at different stages in the pipeline.

The Annual AEA Officer Elections are still open for voting. If you have not voted and wish to participate, watch your postal mail for a paper ballot or your email for an electronic ballot, and return it before September 30, 2022.

The Twelfth Annual AEA Conference on Teaching and Research in Economic Education (CTREE) will be held on May 31 – June 2, 2023 at the Doubletree Hilton in Portland, OR. The conference is hosted by the AEA Committee on Economic Education in conjunction with the Journal of Economic Education. Plenary talks will be given by Julie Berry Cullen of the University of California, San Diego and Martha Bailey of the University of California, Los Angeles.  Submissions will be accepted via the AEA online submission system. Submissions may be of individual papers, complete sessions of three or four papers, posters, workshops, or panels. Submissions of completed sessions are especially encouraged. The submission portal opens September 1, and the submission deadline is December 1, 2022. The submission portal and general information is available at https://www.aeaweb.org/committees/AEACEE/Conference/2023/submissions/.  Send questions about submissions to Gail Hoyt (ghoyt@uky.edu).

Not making a submission this year but willing to serve in another capacity? Please visit the submission portal to volunteer to chair a session or serve as a discussant.
