The U.S. Department of State seeks experienced international economists with an interest in policy to serve as Senior Economist on an appointment up to four years in the Office of Chief Economist in Washington, D.C. The Department of State will consider funding a detail assignment by a successful applicant from another governmental or public institution under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act. The Department would also welcome interest from academics wishing to take a leave of absence from their home institutions.
The incumbent will contribute to analysis of international economic issues that bear on key foreign policy interests, such as global capital flows, emerging market economies, economic sanctions, energy and natural resources, climate change, and trade and investment. The incumbent will also develop and maintain contacts in the policy community, both inside and outside of government.
The successful candidate must be a citizen of the United States and have a Ph.D. in economics or a related field plus at least five years of professional experience; excellent analytical capabilities, especially regarding the theories and principles of international economics; knowledge of research and policy issues such as energy, the environment, and international trade; strong interpersonal, planning and organizational abilities; persuasive oral and written communication skills; and the ability to foster professional relationships with relevant contacts.
The successful applicant will need to obtain a high-level security clearance.
