The Department of Economics, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM, Honolulu, Hawai’i) invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3) in the field of Geoeconomics. This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty appointment beginning August 1, 2027, subject to position clearance and funding availability.

We welcome applicants from all fields of economics whose research advances understanding of how economic interdependence, geopolitical forces, trade, industrial policy, and disruptions shape economic outcomes. Relevant and related fields include, but are not limited to, international trade, political economy, industrial organization, spatial, environmental, and resource economics, macroeconomics, and computational economics. Applicants need not identify geoeconomics as their primary field, provided their research agenda is broadly related to the field. This position will participate and contribute to the College of Social Sciences' new SODA (Social Science Data Analytics) data-sciences initiative, developing and teaching two shared undergraduate courses open to students across the College (Statistical Methods for Social Sciences and Statistical Modeling & Multivariate Analysis for Social Sciences), alongside advanced instruction in geoeconomics.

UHM is a land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant university with the core mission of generating, preserving, and disseminating knowledge for the greater good of the people of the state of Hawaiʻi and the world beyond.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses such as Principles of Economics, International Trade, Geoeconomics, and the College of Social Sciences' shared quantitative-methods sequence (Statistical Methods for Social Sciences and Statistical Modeling & Multivariate Analysis for Social Sciences), developed as part of the College's new SODA (Social Science Data Analytics) data-sciences initiative;

2. Supervise and mentor MA and PhD students;

3. Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in areas of expertise;

4. Seek extramural funding in areas of expertise;

5. Provide service to department, university, and community;

6. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Economics or a related field from a college or university of recognized standing, or foreign equivalent. ABDs will be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed and PhD conferred before the date of hire;

2. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of expertise and quantitative/statistical methods;

3. Ability to mentor and advise students in the applicant's area of research;

4. A record of research achievement (publications, grants) commensurate with time in field;

5. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
