Manager, Portfolio Risk

Shape the future of financial risk management at the Reserve Bank, leading decisions that protect and enhance the stability of New Zealand’s monetary system.

The role

Join the Money Group, which stewards New Zealand’s monetary system and operates key financial market infrastructure. As Manager Portfolio Risk, you will provide strategic leadership for the Bank’s first- and second-line financial risk function, influencing key decisions across policy and balance sheet management.

You will:

Lead oversight of market, credit, liquidity, and balance sheet risks, ensuring alignment with the Bank’s risk appetite.
Provide expert, trusted advice to portfolio managers, ELT, and the Board on financial risk and governance.
Develop and maintain risk frameworks, policies, and modelling capability, including stress testing, scenario analysis, and capital modelling.

Build and lead a high-performing, inclusive team, role-modelling RBNZ values and behaviours.

Contribute to directorate strategy, cross-Bank initiatives, and policy outcomes.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Proven leadership experience in financial markets or banking, with the ability to build high-performing, inclusive teams.

Deep expertise in financial risk management, including market, credit, and liquidity risk, and risk modelling (VaR, stress testing, scenario analysis).

Strong strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and communication skills to influence senior leaders and deliver outcomes.

Ability to analyse complex risk issues and provide practical, well-judged solutions.
