NBER’s Gender in the Economy Working Group, with the generous support of the Gates Foundation, is sponsoring three dissertation fellowships for doctoral students in economics and allied fields, such as political science and health policy, to encourage research on gender issues.

The one-year fellowships, for the academic year 2026-2027, will provide a stipend of $42,500, up to $13,000 for tuition and fees, and $3,000 research fund. Selections will be made based on the applicant’s potential to make important contributions to the field. Fellows will be expected to participate in the GITE meetings at the NBER Summer Institute in July 2026 in Cambridge, MA.

To be eligible for fellowship support, applicants must be enrolled as full-time doctoral students at a U.S. or Canadian university and must have advanced to dissertation candidacy status by the start of the fellowship period. Applicants must submit a research proposal, one and only one letter of recommendation, and a CV by 4:59 pm EST on January 7, 2026. Applications must be marked “Complete” by the deadline to be considered.
