To advance research on the talent development process, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is pleased to offer up to four one-year dissertation fellowships for PhD students in economics and related fields, such as public policy. These fellowships support advanced doctoral students at US and Canadian universities who are researching ways to identify and nurture mathematical talent among youth from all strata of society, including those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Applicants are expected to have advanced to dissertation candidacy by the start of the fellowship period, which will cover the 2026-2027 academic year.

Each fellowship includes a stipend of $34,000, up to $13,000 in tuition assistance, and a $3,000 research support fund. Fellows will join a network of peers with related research interests, receive guidance from an NBER faculty mentor, and participate in the NBER Summer Institute’s Innovation/Productivity meeting in Cambridge, MA, in July 2026.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and a one-page research proposal by January 5, 2026, at 5 pm EST.
