At the U.S. Department of Transportation, Volpe Center, our Economists apply data-driven research skills to answer pressing questions about transportation industries and programs. In the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Program Office, our research provides critical insights to the development and analysis of fuel economy standards. We develop sophisticated models to inform decision makers about the impact of policy on consumers, manufacturers, and society. This requires an interdisciplinary approach and a team with expertise in a range of topics. We are currently hiring PhD Economists. The ideal candidate is comfortable working on a team to refine our regulatory analysis as the auto industry evolves. This involves developing research projects to answer current and emerging questions from stakeholders. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in benefit cost analysis or applied econometrics. Most of our team members work hybrid schedules based in Cambridge, MA, while others work remotely. Volpe employees are entitled to the benefits of federal employment.
