Full Text of JOE Listing:

Coming Spring 2024 - the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) anticipates hiring an empirically-oriented economist interested in research and policy related to intellectual property (IP) – patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.

The OCE supports USPTO evidence-based policy making by evaluating the nature, role, and impact of IP on innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic performance; by assessing economic implications of domestic and international laws and policies regarding IP; and by examining economic aspects and potential consequences of USPTO initiatives. OCE also hosts a seminar series of top-tier IP research.

OCE initiates original research and policy analyses that we communicate through conferences, working papers, peer-reviewed articles, and research reports. Economists with data and analytical experience related to innovation and/or IP, who write and communicate effectively, and who have a strong comprehension of microeconomic analysis are encouraged to apply.

Note: employment opportunities are restricted to U.S. citizens and Nationals. Once available, interested economists will apply at usajobs.gov. This position is telework eligible per agency and business unit discretion/policy. If selected for an interview, applicants are encouraged to discuss telework options and eligibility specific to the position for which they applied with the hiring manager.
