Postdoc position in Macroeconomics / Banking / Finance 100 %

Department of Economics, University of Bern
Starting date: Spring 2024 or by mutual consent

The Department of Economics is one of the leading Economics departments in Switzerland. The outstanding
basic research and practice-oriented applied research are incorporated in our Bachelor's and Master's
degree programs.

The successful candidate will join a group formed by Professors Cyril Monnet and Dirk Niepelt and PhD
students working on a project sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) entitled "Money
and Debt in the 21st Century: Liquidity, Safety, Redistribution".

Project description
The project seeks to develop a framework to analyze and quantify the role of public and private liabilities as liquid means of payment, safe stores of value, and levers for redistribution. The successful applicant will conduct research on questions related to the macroeconomic consequences of new means of payment and payment architectures; the optimal division of tasks between the public and the private sector in this domain; conflicts of interest and their resolution in the political process; and implementation issues including the role of new technologies. Ideally, he/she will already have developed a research agenda in this area but applicants with an adjacent and complementary agenda will also be considered.

We offer
We offer a stimulating and collegial research environment with easy access to members of the Department
of Economics as well as faculty and courses at the Study Center Gerzensee. Employment is over a four-year
period and the internationally competitive conditions of the SNF apply.

Application
Candidates with an excellent PhD degree in economics, a very strong background in theoretical
macroeconomics and some experience in model calibration/simulation are invited to send their concise
application package, including the name of two references, to manuela.soltermann@unibe.ch. The review
of applications will start in late November and will continue until the position is filled. The University of Bern is an equal opportunity employer. As part of the measures to increase the proportion of women in
leading academic positions, the University of Bern encourages women to apply.
