The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio) is seeking an Economist II or a Senior Economist to join its Investments Team. The successful candidate will prepare economic forecasts, conduct economic research, analyze data, and apply economic principles to support development and implementation of investment strategy. Nearly two-thirds of STRS Ohio’s investment assets are managed internally by more than 100 Investment Department professionals. STRS Ohio’s investment returns for the one-, three-, five-, and 10-year time periods ending June 30, 2022, ranked in the top 10% of Callan’s public fund sponsor database of more than 200 public funds. STRS Ohio also outperformed its benchmark for each of these time periods.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, daytime work schedule. Occasional travel may be required.

General Summary:
Economist II: Under the direction of the Senior Economist, research and analyze economic data, develop macroeconomic models, and prepare and present in oral and written form economic forecasts of relevant economic markets and sectors as they relate to the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS Ohio) investment strategy.

Senior Economist: Under the direction of the deputy executive director, Investments and Chief Investment Officer (CIO), research and analyze economic data, develop macroeconomic models, and prepare and present in oral and written form economic forecasts of relevant economic markets and sectors as they relate to the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS Ohio) investment strategy.

Responsibilities:
1. Work with Investments staff in conducting economic research and building models for forecasting securities prices and interest rate trends.
2. Meet regularly with the Investments staff to share views and create a dialogue about economic issues.
3. Develop economic forecasts and periodically present economic projections and research topics to the Board at its Board or special meetings.
4. Periodically compose an Economic Letter for the Investment Committee Meeting report that describes recent economic events and trends and informs the Board and Investments staff about current economic topics.
5. Monitor and evaluate economic, political and socioeconomic trends and continually update forecasts and advise management and staff of significant issues and their effect on investments.
6. Contribute to the preparation of an Annual Investment Plan by providing statistical data for the major economic series of domestic and foreign economies.


Requirements/Experience:
1. Bachelor’s degree required; emphasis in business administration, economics, statistics, finance, applied mathematics or a quantitative oriented field required.
2. Master's degree in business administration, economics, statistics, finance, applied mathematics or a quantitatively oriented field required. Doctorate degree preferred.
3. Minimum of five to ten years’ experience performing economic and investment research including analysis of economic data and modeling required.
4. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder preferred.
5. Ability to conduct econometric analysis and execute forecasting using econometric software required.
6. Ability to conduct research, analyze trends and make recommendations to senior management required.
7. Superior oral and written communication and relationship skills.
8. Ability to work independently and in a team environment while meeting deadlines with minimal direct supervision required.
