General Motors has a deep tradition of using economics to inform a wide range of critical business decisions. The Economics team at GM provides insights to top leadership and colleagues in Finance, Public Policy, Planning, and other areas. We use economic data, research, and reasoning to help GM evaluate issues including the macroeconomic and auto industry outlook in our markets, foreign exchange and commodity markets, electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle adoption, trade policy, and environmental issues.
This position offers an opportunity to work closely with GM’s chief economist and other senior economic staff in conducting economic analysis to inform GM’s business. The Economics and Forecasting Group is part of GM’s Global Portfolio Planning organization.
The economist for international markets and mobility will be a member of GM’s Economics team. The role will have a dual focus, with responsibilities as lead economist for both a broad set of GM’s international markets and for mobility and other microeconomic topics important to GM. These will include:
As lead economist for a broad set of international markets, follow, analyze, and provide forecasts of major macroeconomic indicators including auto sales
As lead economist for mobility and microeconomics, analyze and follow academic research on microeconomic issues relevant to GM, such as electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous vehicles (AVs), trade, or environmental aspects of the auto industry
Collaborate with chief economist on (non-academic) research projects, including participating in the preparation of memos to senior leadership and presentations to GM and external audiences
Participate in discussions with colleagues within GM, including Finance, Public Policy, Planning, and colleagues involved in sales and production in the international markets covered
Participate in conferences; prepare literature reviews; and collaborate with other teams on mobility and other microeconomic topics, bringing research findings into modeling and business decisions
Conduct econometric analysis of auto demand and other issues
Write regular updates for monthly internal publications
3+ years of work experience in a business or policy environment involving tight deadlines.
Candidates may apply with a master’s in economics or Ph.D. or master’s in closely related field such as public policy, plus both extensive course work in economics and several years of work experience in economics.
Ph.D. in economics is strongly preferred
