OIAD is responsible for identifying areas in which investors would benefit from changes to Federal laws, SEC regulations, or the rules of self-regulatory organizations (SROs), and for providing assistance to investors in resolving significant problems they may have with the SEC or SROs. OIAD conducts cross-disciplinary research though its POSITIER investor testing initiative to gather input from investors on rulemaking initiatives and better understand their informational needs.
The Economic Analysis group within OIAD analyzes the potential impact on investors from proposed rule changes and conducts investor testing through the POSITIER program in order to encourage the adoption of data-driven policies. This position is located in the Economic Analysis group and the incumbent will work directly with OIAD's Principal Economic Advisor to provide support to OIAD's POSITIER Investor Testing initiative, which currently studies household financial market participation, investment advice, and improving the effectiveness of investment-related disclosures (with other areas as determined). The incumbent will provide key technical inputs to the research activities of this initiative in the areas of social/decision sciences or statistical methodology and form a key part of the decision-making structure for the undertaking. The incumbent will also work with the Principal Economic Advisor to conduct academic research related to these topical areas and of broad interest to OIAD.
Typical Duties Include:
Providing expert research, analyses, and advice to OIAD colleagues, SEC rulemaking teams, and SEC leadership. Serving as a project leader for major OIAD directed economic studies.
Organizing, conducting, and administering OIAD directed studies of long-range trends of major significance to the securities market and the securities industry.
In partnership with the OIAD Director of Research, designing and implementing experiments to examine investor behavior. Support economic analysis of selected rulemakings as needed.
Evaluating the results of studies with other economists and plans the course of action for current and future research.
Providing key technical inputs to the research activities of the POSITIER initiative in the areas of social/decision sciences or statistical methodology.
Building economic models, determining empirical methodology, organizing and directing data collection, writing and debugging computer code, preparing written reports, summarizing studies in formal and informal presentations.
Providing technical expertise for teams conducting studies and preparing reports which deal with complex areas of financial economic research.
Authoring academic or policy papers broadly related to issues relevant to investor testing or broader OIAD activities.
