The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking experienced finance and economics researchers to fill visiting economist positions in the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). The selected candidates will work in various DERA offices to help analyze economic issues on questions that arise in the context of policy, rulemaking, or enforcement matters. Candidates should demonstrate expertise relevant to or have significant experience (typically four or more years) in at least one of the following areas: financial markets and transactions (operational risk, market microstructure, fixed income, derivatives, and clearance and settlement), financial intermediation and asset management (credit ratings, registered investment companies, private funds, behavioral finance, structured finance, and investment advice), or corporate finance and accounting (valuation, financial accounting, and disclosure).

Job Description: Visiting Scholars at the Commission join a community of nearly 80 Ph.D. trained staff who provide economic guidance and research expertise to a broad range of activities, including rulemaking, enforcement actions, market oversight and monitoring, and other regulatory initiatives. Candidates must have the ability to apply academic research and empirical methods in support of Commission actions and regulatory programs, and are expected to engage in independent research directed at top-tier professional journals.

This vacancy announcement is for Visiting Scholars. DERA uses the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Mobility Program to recruit talented academics as Visiting Scholars for typically one-year contractual appointment agreements between DERA and the applicant’s university or college. Throughout the appointment period, the Visiting Scholar remains employed by their university or college buts work for DERA. This position is open to the following candidates:

-Faculty members of U.S. universities or colleges who have been employed by their university or college for more than 90 days.

Visiting Scholars are designated positions for faculty members at U.S. universities and colleges that typically last one or two years. DERA contracts with the university or college to allow the faculty member to work full-time for DERA.

Qualifications:

• Education: a Ph.D. in economics, finance, accounting, mathematics, statistics, or similarly quantitative field.
• Experience: evidence of a strong research background in the evaluation and interpretation of economic information.
• Must have, and retain throughout the contract, a permanent, full-time faculty position at a U.S. university or college.
