The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking Financial Economists for the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). Candidates should have an interest and research experience in: financial markets and transactions (operational risk, market microstructure, fixed income, derivatives, and clearance and settlement), financial intermediation and asset management (credit ratings, registered investment companies, private funds, behavioral finance, structured finance, and investment advice), or corporate finance and accounting (valuation, financial accounting, and disclosure).

Job Description: Financial Economists at the Commission provide economic guidance and research expertise to a broad range of activities, including rulemakings, enforcement actions, market risk assessments, and other regulatory initiatives. Opportunities exist within DERA to focus on work in specific policy areas, risk assessment and modeling, or litigation support. In all roles, candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge of applied economics or econometrics in support of the Agency’s mission to protect investors, facilitate capital formation, and ensure fair and orderly markets.

This vacancy announcement is for Financial Economist positions, which are permanent, full-time positions that are open to the following candidates:

1. U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S;

3. Individuals eligible for appointment under special hiring authorities.

Qualifications: Applicants must meet both the Education requirements and the Specialized Experience requirements to be eligible for consideration.

• Education: A bachelor’s degree or higher (Ph.D. preferred) from an accredited university or college with a major in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, calculus, or a combination of education and experience including courses equivalent to a major in economics plus appropriate experience and additional education.

• Specialized Experience: Minimum one year of experience (two or more preferred) and qualifying experience will have been obtained in the public or private sector, which includes faculty appointments at academic institutions and certain staff positions at U.S. financial regulators. The candidate’s resume must reflect demonstrated experience in the application of economics. This experience must be demonstrated in at least one of three ways: (a) experience in analyzing the costs and benefits of regulations in financial markets, including effects on market efficiency, competition, and capital formation; (b) experience writing reports analyzing the economics of securities litigation that have been submitted in federal courts or in the context of an SEC action, including the quantification of either harm to investors or ill-gotten gains; or (c) experience writing reports that evaluate the effect of policy and rule changes on market performance and function.
