Full Text of JOE Listing:

The School of Business and Economics at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU), and the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Member of the Leibniz Association jointly seek an Assistant Professor (W1) in Labor Economics

The professorship is to be filled by October 1, 2019. We expect the candidate to have a strong interest in teaching and research in labor economics. The research focus should be on wage determination, factor allocation, firm dynamics, or productivity. A solid background in microeconometrics, the willingness to work at the intersection of labor and financial economics, and a desire to apply economic research to policy questions would be considered as assets.

The Assistant Professorship serves to deepen the collaboration between the School of Business and Economics at FAU and IWH. IWH is one of the six economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany (www.iwh-halle.de). It focuses on research in structural change and productivity, finance, and macroeconomics. The Assistant Professor’s main activities will be associated with the Department of Structural Change and Productivity at IWH. Both FAU and IWH maintain close cooperation with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, and the Assistant Professor is expected to deepen this cooperation further.

Prerequisites are a PhD in Economics to be completed by fall of 2019 at the latest, the potential for publications in leading journals, and ideally an existing network of international research collaborations. FAU and IWH offer structured career development and mentoring. It is expected that the candidate will teach in the FAU Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. Knowledge of the German language is not a requirement for the position.

The professorship will be appointed by a selection committee comprising members from FAU and IWH, and we aim to assign the successful candidate the status of a public servant with limited tenure (Beamtenverhaeltnis auf Zeit). The contract will initially be limited to three years, and may be extended by a further three years given a positive evaluation. The evaluation process will be based on transparent performance agreements.

In their pursuit of academic excellence, FAU and IWH are committed to equality of opportunity and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. Both FAU and IWH have been certified as family-friendly employers and are also responsive to the needs of dual career couples. FAU and IWH specifically encourage women to apply.

Application Procedure:
