Full Text of JOE Listing:

Alaska is a special place, certainly in its natural beauty, but also in the variety and scope of its public and non-profit organizations. Public policy in Alaska has led to one of the most unique indigenous land claim settlements in the world, some of the most substantial conservation areas set aside in U.S. history, and the largest sovereign wealth fund of any U.S. state. Today, Alaska is at the forefront of both climate change and emerging Arctic policy. In this dynamic context, the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) at the University of Alaska Anchorage seeks a motivated candidate with proven leadership ability for the director of its growing public policy and administration programs.

Required Experience:

Ph.D. or Terminal degree in a relevant discipline.
Demonstrated leadership of a university public policy, public administration, or related program.
Successful teaching experience and research record consistent with expectations for tenure.
Program accreditation experience.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Strong planning, communication, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead faculty and academic programs in a climate of shared governance.
Experience in program development and assessment.
Knowledge and experience with NASPAA accreditation.
Experience in Arctic policy or the Alaska policy environment.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

The director will be expected to develop a successful, joint MPP/MPA program by building a curriculum, a department, and a pathway to program accreditation. The director will draw faculty members from the Institute of Social and Economic Research which has been leading public policy research in Alaska for almost 60 years. https://iseralaska.org/. The existing MPA program will also contribute faculty members and expertise in training a new generation of policy makers, analysts, and administrators https://business.uaa.alaska.edu/academics/graduate/mpa/. The director should expect to engage with the public sector community to support program success.

Previous experience in academic leadership at chair, director, associate dean, or equivalent level is preferred and the position may include a tenured faculty appointment. The director will report to the Dean of CBPP and supervise both full and part-time faculty. The position is a 12-month assignment and includes teaching three classes per year in the program. The successful candidate will lead student recruitment and enrollment efforts as well as support student success. UAA is committed to building high quality, accredited programs and therefore, previous experience with program accreditation is essential. The Director will support the existing efforts toward pursuing NASPAA accreditation of the MPA program.
