Microsoft seeks applications for a position creating academic research with novel and highly granular data and applying it to real world problems in the Office of the Chief Economist at our Seattle-area headquarters. We will primarily focus on candidates from fresh Ph.D.’s to 6 years out but will consider more senior candidates. Candidates should be proficient coders with a desire to learn and use big data computing clusters and the associated scripting languages. Pursuing top-tier publications is expected and strongly supported.

Research Economists work closely with Chief Economist Preston McAfee and his team of economists and data scientists on high-impact projects in a supportive research environment. Topic areas include but are not limited to market design, cloud marketplaces, auctions, optimal contracts, product competition, applied theory with applied microeconometric applications, scalable econometrics, structural demand estimation, using ML for both prediction and causal inference, optimal capacity investment, and measuring ad effectiveness. Successful candidates should drive their own research agenda as well as work with the broader team.
