The Institute of Labor Economics (IZA, formerly the Institute for the Study of Labor) is an international research center with the mission to generate independent academic research and scientific policy advice to the highest quality standards. The research agenda of the institute is focused on policy-relevant labor market topics. Special interest is given to the impact of institutional settings, labor market policies, and firm-level strategies on labor market outcomes. IZA is located in Bonn, Germany, and manages a strong worldwide network of Research Fellows and Affiliates from major research institutions. It closely co-operates with the universities of Bonn and Cologne.

IZA provides a highly stimulating research environment, with excellent facilities and great opportunities through its excellent network. Its research staff is a productive blend of established labor economists and promising young academics. IZA has an active weekly seminar series attracting renowned international labor economists and hosts many well-regarded labor economics workshops and conferences.

In order to enforce its local staff, IZA has openings for

(i) Research Team Leaders

of the research fields of “Demographic Change” and “Policy Evaluation”. Research Team Leaders will join our core staff in Bonn and take responsibility for a group of in-house researchers working under their leadership. The key responsibilities in this position are:

• conduct excellent applied research and actively engage in transfer of knowledge
• develop and implement a research agenda that is innovative, relevant and policy-focused,
• lead, supervise, support and foster a team of in-house researchers,
• create and maintain working relationships with external academics, research institutions, and practitioners,
• contribute to the overall development and reputation of IZA in collaboration with the institute’s management.

The ideal candidate has gained at least five years of experience as postdoctoral researcher and has an excellent grasp of econometrics and policy-relevant labor issues. A record of high-quality peer-reviewed journals is expected. Proven skills to attract external funding are a plus.

The positions offer a competitive compensation package plus a travel budget. There are no teachings obligations. The appointment is initially for four years, with the possibility to obtain tenure, conditional on a positive assessment of performance in the position.

(ii) Research Associates

Candidates are ideally close to completion of their Ph.D., bring excellent knowledge of econometrics and a strong interest in applied and policy-oriented labor issues. Their research agenda should fit one of our four focus areas: Labor Market and Social Policy in Europe, Demographic Change, Organizational Change, and Policy Evaluation. Team spirit and active participation in the intellectual environment of IZA is an essential. Research associates will support our network activities and should engage in attracting external research funding. They are expected to publish their research in top peer-reviewed journals.

The appointment is for up to 6 years, initially for 3 years, with a possibility of renewal for 3 more years. The positions offer a competitive compensation package plus a travel budget, and no teachings obligations. However, teaching opportunities at one of the local universities are available upon interest.
