The Defense Analysis Department at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, is seeking to fill a position as Senior Lecturer in international security with professional expertise in Special Operations. The successful candidate can be from any of a variety of academic disciplines in the social sciences or humanities. A broad knowledge of US national security policy, as well as of the relevant international security literature is required. The successful candidate will be expected to teach mid-career military officers from the Special Operations and Information Operations communities across all branches of the military and from allied countries, advise theses, and conduct research. Familiarity in the role of information in modern war is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to engage senior civilian and military defense officials on a broad range of issues relevant to the education of students at NPS.

NPS provides graduate education to military officers of the uniformed services, Department of Defense civilians, and members of the international defense community, as well as other select professionals employed by the federal government. Preferred candidates will have teaching experience and a publication record commensurate with their academic experience. Candidates must also have an interest in interdisciplinary research and willingness to work with a cross-disciplinary faculty in areas outside of their own focus. NPS follows a quarter system, and the normal teaching workload for those in lectureship positions ranges from four to six graduate courses per year.

The Naval Postgraduate School is located on the central coast of California in Monterey, about 120 miles south of San Francisco. The Defense Analysis Department offers a MS in Defense Analysis and a MS in Information Strategy and Political Warfare. Home to 150 in-resident students (on average), a faculty of 40-plus personnel, and three respected research centers, the Defense Analysis Department provides the critical thinking skills necessary for future national security leaders to deal with the complex operating environments of the 21st Century. Minimum qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in any relevant Social Science or Humanities discipline (e.g., Sociology, Anthropology, History, the Classics, Philosophy Political Science, Public Administration, Law, International Relations, Psychology, Economics, or other fields)
• U.S. citizenship is required. Must be eligible for a security clearance.
• Publication record commensurate with academic experience.

Additional preferred qualifications:
• Experience teaching graduate students.
• Extensive experience as a special operations professional in the US military.
• Interagency experience at the policy level with the diplomatic and/or intelligence communities.
