The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is seeking an Executive Director for the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE). This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an individual with experience drawn from a broad range of behavioral, social sciences, and education disciplines to lead a nationally significant science program whose mission is to advance the frontiers of the behavioral and social sciences and their applications to public policy. DBASSE is one of seven program units of the Academies. With expertise drawn from many disciplines, DBASSE’s studies and other activities contribute to government decision-making and public policy in matters involving the behavioral and social sciences and education.

The Executive Director is responsible for fulfilling the vision, defining the strategic direction, and leading the management of the division. The position reports to the Executive Officer of the National Research Council, and contributes to institutional management and policy-making while establishing current and long-range objectives for DBASSE. The Executive Director’s responsibilities include program development, execution, and funding; fiscal management; sponsor and volunteer relations; human resources management; and external communications. In 2016, DBASSE is projected to have revenues between $16 and $18 million and approximately 85 staff. Please see the DBASSE website for additional information:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or Master’s degree with equivalent experience in the behavioral or social sciences, education, or other discipline relevant to DBASSE’s mission. A minimum of 16 years of scholarship, research, and/or professional experience in a related field of which at least six years include senior management and program development. Experience working in a complex research, educational or technical institution; ability to cultivate strong working relationships with others in the institution, as well as external subject matter experts and Academy members. An understanding of how nonprofit organizations that contract with the federal government operate is highly desirable. The ability to work with senior division leadership to secure financial support for the division’s activities is important.
