The Independent Budget Office (IBO), a nonpartisan city agency, seeks an experienced economist with a keen interest in public policy to join our tax and economics team. Candidates with a background in public finance, tax policy analysis, a thorough understanding of the New York City economy and/or detailed knowledge of one or more of the leading sectors in the city’s tax base are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities include quantitative research on economics and taxes, forecasting one or more of the city’s major tax revenue sources, and tracking New York City’s economy. A Ph.D. in Economics, Public Policy or related field is preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered. Experience in an applied research organization and writing for a policy-oriented audience a plus.

Candidates should be detail-oriented and able to demonstrate skills in quantitative research and policy analysis. Commitment to impartial and independent research is essential. Must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment, juggling multiple tasks, and interacting with a variety of stakeholders on relevant city issues. Ability to write clearly, take initiative and meet deadlines is critical.
