Full Text of JOE Listing:

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) at Northeastern University invites nominations and applications by outstanding candidates for multiple faculty appointments (open rank) in the areas of “big data,” quantitative methods, and network science in the social sciences. CSSH seeks to bolster existing strengths in the areas of computational social science (e.g., statistical estimation in large scale data, analysis of social media or textual data, mobile phone informatics, and large scale web-based experiments) and computational methods (e.g., data mining, information retrieval, machine learning, network science, computational algorithms, simulation). We also seek candidates with expertise in traditional quantitative methods of the social sciences (e.g., econometrics) and in GIS. Faculty appointments will be made in one or more of the member departments of the CSSH, and cross-college appointments are possible. Successful applicants will contribute to a planned Program in Quantitative Methods within CSSH and may be affiliated with Northeastern’s center for computational social science, the NULab for Texts, Maps and Networks (http://www.northeastern.edu/nulab/) and interdisciplinary programs in urban informatics and data science. They will have opportunities to collaborate with internationally recognized interdisciplinary research and educational programs (e.g., the nation’s first PhD program in Network Science at Northeastern’s Network Science Institute) that align with Northeastern’s strategic research themes of health, security, and sustainability.

Candidates must have a PhD in a social science discipline such as criminology, economics, geography, political science, sociology, or a related field by the start of the appointment, and a record of publication and research funding commensurate with rank. Successful applicants will have the ability to initiate and lead major funded research projects, to promote innovation in teaching, and to engage with practitioners in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is a leader in the experiential liberal arts (www.northeastern.edu/cssh/about/deans-welcome). Northeastern University in Boston is a nationally ranked research university with a strong urban mission, a global perspective, and an emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship and experiential learning.

Required application materials include CV, cover letter, writing sample, research statement, teaching statement, and the names of three referees (letters are not required in the initial application). Review of applications will begin October 17, 2015 and the search will remain open until all positions are filled.
