The Applied Economics Office, http://www.nist.gov/el/economics/index.cfm, seeks qualified applicants in the areas of sustainability and resilience.

-Sustainability - The research objective is to assess the sustainability and efficiency of current and emerging building energy technologies and manufacturing processes. The applicant will employ statistical/econometric/microeconomic analysis skills to:

1. Research sustainability of construction and manufacturing processes;
2. Evaluate programs in power generation for cost-effective environmental controls and for renewable energy substitution;
3. Measure environmental and economic impacts; and
4. Develop microeconomic models for evaluating construction and manufacturing applications.

- Resilience - The research objective is to evaluate the ability of communities to adapt, withstand, and quickly recover from natural and human-caused hazard events. The applicant will employ statistical/econometric/microeconomic analysis skills to:

1. Developing methods for the collection of relevant statistics of at-risk building and infrastructure stock, and historical records of losses;
2. Improving methods to identify and model community cost components;
3. Developing economic measures of merit for selecting cost-effective combinations of risk mitigation and recovery strategies; and
4. Producing draft standards for modeling losses and assessing disaster resilience leading to the development of decision support tools.

Responsibilities include research; publishing refereed journal articles and research reports; and designing decision-support software. We desire an applicant with a strong background in at least two of the following areas: microeconomics, quantitative analysis, environmental economics, econometrics, life-cycle assessment, benefit-cost analysis, simulation modeling, and decision analysis. Oral, written, and interpersonal skills are essential.

The Applied Economics Office, a part of the Engineering Laboratory at NIST, provides economic products and services through research and consulting to industry and government agencies in support of productivity enhancement, economic growth, and international competitiveness, with a focus on improving the life-cycle quality and economy of constructed facilities and manufacturing processes.
