The Economic and Social Research Institute, founded in 1960, is located in Dublin’s South Docklands area. Its mission is to produce high quality research, relevant to Ireland’s economic and social development, with the aim of contributing to knowledge and informing policymaking and public debate. It has almost 100 staff including economists, sociologists, social scientists, support and technical staff.

The Institute has initiated a new 3-year research programme on recreational angling and fisheries. We wish to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project titled “Research Programme on Socio-economics of Inland Fisheries”, which is funded by Inland Fisheries Ireland. The project’s output will be policy orientated peer-reviewed journal publications and will involve collaboration with colleagues from NUI Galway (NUIG) and Inland Fisheries Ireland, among others. The appointee will also hold an adjunct position at Trinity College Dublin.

The objective of the programme is to provide evidence that will support policy decisions regarding the management of the inland fisheries resource and angling within Ireland. Research issues may include angling permit allocation methods; angling preferences and experiences among domestic non-Irish nationals; recreational angling demand in Ireland; and the preferences of international tourist anglers.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidates will have:
•A PhD in Economics (completed or close to completion);
•Preferably research experience in the areas of angling/fishing, non-market valuation techniques (i.e. revealed and/or stated preference methods), survey instrument design;
•Excellent communication, computer and writing skills;
•Demonstrated the ability to work successfully within a highly motivated team and on their own initiative;
•Proven ability to deliver high quality output to tight deadlines.


Appointments will be on a three-year fixed-term contract basis and salary will be in the range €38,554 - €42,838, commensurate with experience. The successful candidates will be based in offices in Dublin 2.
