The American Institutes for Research Health Policy and Research (HPR) group specializes in research, evaluation, policy analysis, measurement, performance management, and technical assistance in the areas of health services organization, quality of care, quality of life, consumer engagement, health communication, financing and cost of care, and behavioral health (i.e., substance abuse and mental health). HPR’s major clients include the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), private foundations, and state governments.

We are currently seeking a Principal Evaluation Researcher to join our San Mateo, CA office.

Responsibilities:
The Principal Researcher will manage evaluation and measures development projects with responsibilities to include:

• Provide content expertise in health services delivery system organization and payment models
• Serve as client contact for research design and analytical expertise
• Lead evaluation projects or tasks
• Lead the design of surveys and patient- or consumer-reported measures, such as CAHPS
• Develop conceptual frameworks that guide project work
• Apply appropriate techniques to collect, analyze and report quantitative and qualitative data
• Organize and document analytical results and research procedures
• Prepare reports and present findings to clients and the public
• Lead the design, writing, and submission of research proposals for new contracts and grants
• Mentor researchers by helping them solve concrete problems and provide feedback on the work of others

Qualifications:
• Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Dr.P.H., M.D., J.D.) in economics, social sciences, clinical sciences, law or related field.
• At least 7 years of relevant, successful work experience in health services research; contract research experience is highly desirable, government or academic experience is also relevant.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the organization and reimbursement models used in health care in the United States.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the design of experimental and quasi-experimental health services research.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the methods used to collect, analyze, and report quantitative and qualitative data for research, evaluation, and measures development; including combining data from multi-methods studies to derive conclusions, measures, and policy recommendations.
• Demonstrated proficiencies in writing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and consulting, including the ability to help clients understand their needs and how alternative solutions can provide the information they need.
• Demonstrated experience managing project and proposal teams.
• Experience with statistical and qualitative software for data collection, management, and analysis.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise junior and mid-level research staff with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a collaborative research environment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills that emphasize concise, high-level summaries and briefings.
• Ability to exercise leadership in the selection of research opportunities to pursue, the design of proposals, and the conduct of the work on the projects that are awarded.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize the success of the team and the organization as well as oneself in the health services research endeavor.
