Full Text of JOE Listing:

Old Dominion University (ODU) announces an Assistant or Associate Professor position in the Socioeconomic Impacts of Sea Level Rise (SLR), as part of its new University (http://www.odu.edu/content/dam/odu/units/strategicplan/docs/14-19/odu-strategic-plan-2014-2019.pdf) and Research (http://odu.edu/facultystaff/research2/strategic-plan.html) Strategic Plans. ODU is located in the metropolitan Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, which is the second largest U.S. population center at risk from the impacts of sea level rise. Hampton Roads, the 37th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in the U.S., is home to the world’s largest natural deep water port and third most active port on the East Coast, the Atlantic headquarters of NATO, and Naval Station Norfolk, which houses the U.S. Navy and U.S. Fleet Forces Command and is the largest naval base in the world. ODU is Hampton Road’s comprehensive research university, currently enrolling more than 25,000 students with almost 5,000 graduate students and nearly 1,500 international students.

ODU’s Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Initiative (CCSLRI) has facilitated research and education in all aspects of climate change and SLR. Announced by President John R. Broderick in 2010, its goal is to “bring the university and region’s foremost experts together to find solutions to the challenges facing our region and other regions globally.” The Mitigation and Adaptation Research Institute (MARI) is an outgrowth of the CCSLRI efforts, working with stakeholders within and outside the region to generate knowledge that can enable them not only to reduce the negative aspects of climate change and SLR, but also to make positive use of the opportunities in the coming changes. The Center for Sea Level Rise is the home base for the Intergovernmental Pilot Project based at ODU. The Pilot Project is a two-year initiative to develop a regional “whole of government" and "whole of community" approach to SLR preparedness and resilience planning in Hampton Roads that also can be used as a template for other regions.

ODU seeks a scholar who takes a socioeconomic approach to studying SLR. This approach could include econometrics, demography, geospatial analysis, network analysis, systems analysis, modeling and simulation, and visualization, among others. The position will have a tenure track or tenured appointment in the appropriate department and college.

The successful applicant must articulate a strong vision for his or her research program and a commitment to leadership in SLR. She or he will be expected to collaborate with other ODU faculty working on SLR and to use coastal Virginia as a natural laboratory. She or he also will also be expected to obtain external research, establish collaborations with other universities and research institutions that are prominent in SLR, as well as community stakeholders, and assist in developing innovative and inclusive undergraduate and graduate programs.

Applicants must possess an appropriate terminal degree and an academic record commensurate with their time in the field. Candidates for the associate professor position must have academic records that merit a tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor. A successful record in research and grant writing is required for a tenured appointment, as is evidence of leadership and the ability to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies. Candidates for the assistant professor position must possess the potential for success in research and grant writing and the ability to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies.

Applications should include a letter of interest that specifies the Associate or Assistant Professor position, addresses the position’s qualifications and responsibilities, and speaks to CCSLRI’s goals. Applications should also include a curriculum vita, statement of research interests and contact information for three professional references, including email addresses and phone numbers. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2015, and the position will remain open until an appointment is made. Applications should be submitted electronically to https://jobs.odu.edu by clicking on Teaching and Research Faculty opportunities.

Old Dominion University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
