Position: The Economics of Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University(TC) is seeking a scholar with expertise in the economics of education. We are interested in promising young scholars as well as established faculty who wish to work in an engaging academic and professional environment in a world-class university with outstanding faculty and students. Rank and disciplinary focus are open, though scholars with interests in international education and development, inequality, accountability policies, and/or non-cognitive skills would be particularly complementary with existing program strengths.

The Economics of Education program is housed within TC’s new interdisciplinary Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis(EPSA), which also includes programs in Education Policy, Politics and Education, and Sociology and Education. Three active research centers are currently associated with the program.

This position provides an excellent setting for an economist studying education. Program faculty are members of the Columbia Committee on the Economics of Education(CCEE), which brings together economists from across the university(including the Department of Economics, the Business School, Barnard College, the School of International and Public Affairs, and TC). This consortium sponsors a weekly economics of education seminar, hosted by TC and featuring nationally-recognized scholars from around the country. In addition, our location in New York City offers rich research and data opportunities for scholars interested in urban education issues(both at the K-12 and postsecondary level) as well as international education(our student population comes from all over the world).

Responsibilities: Maintain an active research and publications profile; policy work and public engagement are also encouraged. Teach graduate courses in economics of education. Advise masters and doctoral students, and participate in program administration and development activities. Work collegially with students and faculty from both EPSA and the CCEE to build upon common research and intellectual interests.

Qualifications: Earned doctorate in economics or public policy, or a related field with a demonstrated concentration in economics; evidence of scholarly accomplishments and likelihood of future productivity in the field of economics of education; ability to communicate across disciplinary boundaries and outside academe; history of or potential for external research support.
