Full Text of JOE Listing:

Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS-Q) aims to recruit two research-oriented economists for core faculty positions in the School of Foreign Service in Qatar, as part of a major expansion of curricular and research programs. Core faculty positions are full-time positions which carry the job security and commitment to academic freedom associated with tenure-track appointments.

Positions described in this advertisement are part of a large, multi-year strategic expansion of the SFS-Q faculty (http://qatar.sfs.georgetown.edu/grow/).

Elements of the research program in economics at SFS-Q include a regular seminar series, a research mentoring program that brings senior global scholars chosen by incumbent faculty to Doha for brief visits, a visiting scholar program that supports more extensive involvement by leading scholars, periodic post-doctoral research workshops, opportunities to spend time at the Economics Department on our main campus in Washington, DC (http://econ.georgetown.edu/), and regular research semesters. For additional details regarding programmatic support for economics faculty research at SFS-Qatar please see http://qatar.sfs.georgetown.edu/321707.html.

The nominal teaching load is 2-2 for core faculty and visiting faculty. However, entry-level appointments carry course-load reductions during the first two years. Junior colleagues are then eligible to apply for a “junior research semester” free of teaching. After that, continuing course-load reductions are awarded on the basis of research productivity and colleagues who earn senior core faculty status are eligible to apply for periodic research sabbaticals.

We seek applications from colleagues at all ranks in economic development, international economics, political economy, and related fields (e.g., energy, environmental, resource security, etc.). We are particularly interested in hearing from colleagues who want to establish research teams.

Applicants at advanced rank must have substantial research accomplishments and evidence of ambitious ongoing research agendas; entry-level applicants must have exceptional promise of future research productivity. All applicants must have outstanding teaching credentials.

Qatar offers a diverse, safe, and family-friendly environment. Compensation and expatriate benefits packages are extremely competitive both in US and global terms, and include free high-quality housing, utilities, local transportation allowance, annual family home leave allowance, medical insurance, private school tuition for accompanying children through secondary education, etc., as well as tax protection for US citizens (Qatar does not levy income tax).

SFS-Q provides generous research support and support for conference travel; these appointments include generous start-up research funds. Faculty members at the School of Foreign Service in Qatar are eligible to apply for Qatar National Priorities Research Program grants from the Qatar National Research Fund. These competitive grants are up to $300,000 per year for up to three years. QNRF also offers competitive research grants for early-career scholars. For more information see http://www.qnrf.org/.
