The University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies. We seek an outstanding leader to help the school to continue its growth and development, and expand its vision and reach. UMass Boston, a Carnegie-classified research/high university, is located on Boston Harbor, in one of the intellectually richest and most culturally diverse cities in the world. It has an enrollment of more than 16,000 students and offers more than 200 academic programs leading to certificates and baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees.

The John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies comprises three departments, each of which houses a doctoral program: the Department of Gerontology; the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs; and the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance. The school is also home to a number of other degree programs, including master of science programs in public affairs, international relations, and conflict resolution. The school hosts a number of centers and institutes, which are engaged in a broad range of scholarly and service activities that have local, national, and global impact. For example, the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy is a unit that seeks to expand the involvement of women in politics and policies that affect them, their families, and their communities. As the school’s chief administrative and academic officer, the dean reports directly to the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. The dean promotes a culture of excellence, and establishes an environment conducive to successful teaching, learning, research, service, and practice. Among the dean’s responsibilities are: recruiting and developing faculty, promoting and sustaining excellent academic programs and student success, forging strong collaborative relationships with other colleges and with external organizations and constituencies, developing and monitoring budgets, increasing the school’s endowment, and advancing internationalization.

A candidate should preferably have an earned terminal degree in a relevant field (although interested persons with other educational credentials and outstanding leadership experience are encouraged to apply); a portfolio of significant publications; a record of innovative and successful leadership; substantial academic administrative experience; experience in generating and overseeing funded research and/or in securing corporate or foundation support; and a strong commitment to diversity and shared governance.
