The United States Department of Transportation is currently recruiting a Chief Economist position at the Senior Executive Service (SES) level within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy. The position will focus on providing strategies for improving the economic efficiency of federal surface, maritime and aviation transportation programs. The Chief Economist provides leadership to economists throughout the Department and interacts with economists at other departments, at the White House, internationally, and throughout the transportation community. The Chief Economist and his or her staff develop economic analysis of proposed transportation infrastructure investments, proposed regulations, and other policy interventions. Improvements in benefit-cost analysis methodologies, and issuance of guidance on key parameters to be used in such analysis (such as value of statistical life and value of time) are a key part of this work.
