Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Harvard Economics Department wishes to hire a Head Section Leader for Economics 10, the full-year introductory economics course. This course enrolls about 700 students each year. Graduate students teach much of the material in sections of approximately 20 students, while a lead faculty member and other members of the Department give course-wide lectures. The Head Section Leader teaches one section each term and holds the rank of Lecturer or a rank commensurate with qualifications.

The Head Section Leader coordinates the entire course, which is a major undertaking that requires significant work throughout both semesters, as well as moderate work during the summer and winter breaks. Duties include preparing the schedule and syllabus, revising the teaching materials, revising practice problems, selecting readings, writing problem sets and answer keys, drafting exam questions and answer keys, creating grading guidelines for exams, proctoring exams and computing grade distributions, hiring and training about 35 graduate student section leaders, monitoring section leaders, organizing course-wide lectures, participating in lectures and lunches with speakers and section leaders, holding office hours, answering email, supervising a unit-test program, and supervising a staff assistant. The Head Section Leader will also work more generally with the undergraduate economics program and the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

A PhD in economics is strongly preferred but not required. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are also necessary, plus a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and an ability to work with diverse constituencies. This appointment is renewable every five years based on performance and curricular needs. Application deadline is December 1, 2014. To apply, please e-mail a cover letter, CV, one research paper, and two reference letters to Paul Kelso, pkelso@fas.harvard.edu.

Harvard University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. We especially welcome applications from women and minority candidates.
