The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is one of the leading behavioral and social science research organizations in the world. AIR's Health and Social Development Program's work is mission-driven with a strong focus on improving the health and well-being of the American public, especially disadvantaged populations. Our researchers apply diverse methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches to a variety of health issues, including health reform, delivery system improvement, health care cost and financing, performance measurement, access and disparities, and consumer engagement. AIR Health's major clients include government agencies (e.g., Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health), private foundations, and state governments.

We are currently seeking a Health Economist/Principal Researcher to join our Washington, DC, Silver Spring, MD, Chapel Hill, NC or San Mateo, CA office.

The Health Economist/Principal Researcher will work on several projects with responsibilities that include:
-Designing and leading research and evaluation studies in areas of health care financing, cost, and reimbursement policy.
-Evaluating effect of changes in reimbursement policy on organization, cost, utilization, and quality
-Identifying and implementing empirical approaches that will yield the strongest causal inferences yet will be feasible given data and resource limitations
-Developing conceptual frameworks that guide project work
-Serving as client and colleague contact for analytical or statistical expertise
-Applying appropriate techniques to collect, analyze and report quantitative data
-Organizing and documenting analytical results and research procedures
-Preparing technical reports and journal articles and present findings to clients and to the public
-Conceptualizing, writing, and leading new research proposals and supporting proposals led by colleagues

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in economics or a related field and expertise in applied microeconomics, program evaluation, econometrics or applied statistics. Candidate should be:
-Knowledgeable about Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance
-Knowledgeable about national health care reform, value-based purchasing, and comparative effectiveness research
-Knowledgeable about relationship between access, utilization, cost, and quality of health care.
-Knowledgeable about the organization of the U.S. health care delivery system
-Experienced with the analysis of data collected through complex sample designs, multilevel modeling, and the design of experiments and quasi-experiments
-Experienced with benefit cost analysis, cost effectiveness analysis, and return on investment models
-Proficient with the use of statistical software such as SAS or STATA
-Able to apply advanced econometric/statistical methods and able to communicate effectively about these methods to non-technical audiences.
