William Nordhaus (1941–2026)
The American Economic Association and the economics profession were saddened to learn of the passing of William Nordhaus at age 85. A Nobel laureate and the Sterling Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at Yale University, Nordhaus was best known for his pioneering research on the economics of climate change. In the early 1990s, he created the highly influential Dynamic Integrated Climate-Economy (DICE) model, which became a standard tool for simulating how the economy and climate evolve together and for weighing the costs and benefits of climate policies. Beyond climate, Nordhaus made influential contributions to the measurement of economic growth and welfare, and to the theory of the political business cycle.
In addition to having a distinguished academic career, Nordhaus served as president of the AEA in 2014 and as a member of the AEA Executive Committee from 1983 to 1985. He was named an AEA Distinguished Fellow in 2004.
