Gary Becker, Clark Medalist 1967

Citation on the Occasion of the Presentation of the Medal

Gary Becker's versatility and imagination have enlarged the scope and power of our science. In his skillful hands, economic analysis illuminates basic aspects of the behavior of human beings in society: the importance of investment to augment their productive capacity, the allocation of their time, the growth of their members, their crimes and punishments, their racial prejudices. Throughout his work he displays a rare combination of rigor and relevance. With anticipation no less than gratitude, the Association awards Gary Becker the John Bates Clark medal.
