Apr 28 -- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury Department, invites public comment on proposed regulations prescribing mortality tables to be used for most defined benefit pension plans. The tables specify the probability of survival year-by-year for an individual based on age, gender, and other factors. The tables are used (together with other actuarial assumptions) to calculate the present value of a stream of expected future benefit payments for purposes of determining the minimum funding requirements for the plan. These mortality tables are also relevant for determining the minimum required amount of a lump-sum distribution from such a plan. These regulations affect participants in, beneficiaries of, employers maintaining, and administrators of certain defined benefit pension plans.

Written or electronic comments must be received by June 9, 2022. A public hearing on these proposed regulations has been scheduled for June 28, 2022 at 10 a.m. EST. Requests to speak and outlines of topics to be discussed at the public hearing must be received by June 9, 2022. If no outlines are received by June 9, 2022, the public hearing will be cancelled. Requests to attend the public hearing must be received by 5 p.m. EST on June 24, 2022.
