Agriculture is now a loss making enterprise the world over.  A large number of those who are purely engaged in agriculture remain poor. Yet the people in the agriculturally prosperous regions are better off. Does it mean that,  agriculture still remains a driving force that stimulates growth in non farm activities and also helps people to get cheaper food? Child nutrition is a reliable indicator of welfare.
