Ethics of Security/Security of Ethics: The possibilities and limits of critical security studies
Coventry, University of Warwick, Scarman House, United Kingdom
The aim of this workshop is bring together authors working around the nexus of this dichotomy ethics of security/security of ethics, not as an exercise in flag waving, but rather to develop a critical interrogation of this important if problematic subject. Key questions that participants might address include: - Is an ethical approach to security possible? - Is ???progress?? possible through security and, if so, how is this to be conceptualised/ realised? - Is there an inherent logic or dominant discourse of security that must necessarily be escaped for progress to be realised? - What ethical commitments underpin contemporary practices of security? - What ethical commitments underpin the practices of those resisting security? - What ethical commitments underpin contemporary practices of theorising security? - Are we just securitizing ethics? - Is de-securitisation an ethic? - Is it possible to de-construct/resist the dichotomy between ethics and security?
