At the U.S. Department of Transportation, Volpe Center, our Economists conduct data-driven research on transportation industries and programs. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Program Office provides critical insights to the development and analysis of fuel economy standards. Our interdisciplinary team develops sophisticated models to inform decision makers about the impact of policy on consumers, manufacturers, and society. Our organization is committed to fostering a diverse workforce where employees are valued for their unique backgrounds.

We are currently hiring PhD Economists. The ideal candidate is comfortable working on a team to refine our regulatory analysis as the auto industry evolves. Successful researchers take a creative and independent approach to tackling complex and challenging questions raised by policymakers and industry stakeholders. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in benefit cost analysis or applied econometrics. Experience conducting research related to the transportation industry or transportation policy is also advantageous. Most of our team members work hybrid schedules based in Cambridge, MA, while others work remotely. Volpe employees are entitled to the benefits of federal employment.
