Postdoctoral Position at Vanderbilt University Department of Economics

Vanderbilt University is seeking applications for one postdoctoral scholar position in the areas of applied microeconomics, public policy, and inequality to begin in Summer 2023. The position will be housed within a newly developing center at Vanderbilt focused on economic and social inequality, led by Kitt Carpenter (Professor of Economics). The ideal candidate is a public finance, labor, health, development, crime, or education economist who studies the policy-relevant causes and consequences of inequality. A PhD in economics by the start date is required.

Responsibilities include:
1. Carrying out a full-time active research program focusing primarily on the causes and consequences of inequality.
2. Working closely with the PI (Kitt Carpenter) and other Vanderbilt University faculty working on inequality-related topics, especially those that are likely to have the potential for external funding, to develop new collaborative research projects.
3. Attending two weekly seminars in applied microeconomics.
4. Guest lecturing in courses related to the postdoc’s area of expertise.
5. Mentoring, with supervision from the PI, undergraduate and graduate student research.

The postdoctoral scholar will be supervised by Kitt Carpenter, though the scholar may work more closely with other Vanderbilt faculty. The one-year postdoctoral fellowships will begin 7/1/2023 (or earlier if mutually agreeable) and carry the possibility of a one-year renewal. [Our preference is for candidates to be able to spend both academic year (AY) 23-24 and 24-25 at Vanderbilt.] The position carries a twelve-month salary of $67,500, shared office space, health insurance, and eligibility for other benefits (https://www.vanderbilt.edu/postdoc/faqs/). Funds will also be available for conference travel. These full-time and in-residence positions require a physical presence in Nashville for the term of the fellowship. The newly developing center will be housed in space shared with the Vanderbilt LGBTQ+ Policy Lab, though the scholar need not focus their research on LGBTQ+ populations or topics. We are especially interested in scholars from the LGBTQ+ community, women, and underrepresented minorities. We are also interested in scholars who would benefit from the professional development activities of the Policy Lab, including grant writing skills.

Applicants should provide a cover letter describing interesting in the position and future research plans, CV, EDI statement, a research paper or writing sample, and three references at: apply.interfolio.com/116702. Applications will be reviewed immediately and until the positions are filled.

Vanderbilt University is committed to recruiting and retaining an academically and culturally diverse community of exceptional scholars. Women, minorities, and members of other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Vanderbilt University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer.
