The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Senior Staff Associate I (Officer of Research) to support research on domestic and/or international energy policy, geopolitics, technology, equality and justice, markets, development, oil and gas, natural gas, hydrogen, electricity, carbontech, or other relevant areas (e.g., the energy transition to zero-carbon fuels, energy and public health).

The incumbent will use expertise about the research subject and independently design, execute and interpret research, conduct literature reviews; generate, analyze and visualize data. The incumbent will contribute to outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, issue briefs, op-eds, including serving as a first author on publications, as appropriate. They will present at conferences, seminars and/or events. They will ensure deliverable deadlines are met and coordinate and work with external or partner organizations. Look for funding opportunities or collaborations related to research. Under the direction of a PI, they will assist with grant applications.

The position will leverage linkages between other areas of ongoing work across the Earth Institute, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, and Columbia University more broadly, including its Climate School. The position will engage at a high level with key stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (science, engineering, public policy, economics, international affairs, political science, etc.)
● 6-10 years of professional experience across some combination of the following topics: the power sector, electricity markets, renewable energy, natural gas, energy infrastructure development, energy investment, energy markets, energy policy, energy justice, the energy sector, and/or climate policy. Time spent pursuing graduate education may substitute for professional experience requirements.
● Strong verbal communication skills as well as excellent writing and copy-editing skills.
● Project management skills, excellent management of internal and external communications, and extraordinary attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in relevant field (science, engineering, public policy, economics, international affairs, political science, etc.)
● Experience in developing and utilizing quantitative tools and qualitative methods for policy and/or technical analysis
● Experience in developing policy analysis and preparing recommendations
● Publication record that includes a combination of peer-reviewed journal, research reports, issue briefs, op-eds, and other outputs.
● Strong language skills, including proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
