The Stress Testing Research section conducts research and analysis that inform model and policy developments relating to the Federal Reserve’s stress testing program. The stress testing program consists of a set of forward-looking exercises intended to ensure that the largest financial institutions in the U.S. have sufficient capital to absorb losses and to continue to support operations during adverse economic conditions.

The section’s main public work products include:

Supervisory Stress Test Methodology
Dodd-Frank Act Stress Tests 2022

We conduct research and analysis that advance our understanding of risk in the largest financial institutions. Our insights inform the direction of both stress testing model development and policies. Additionally, our work encompasses:

Key policy and technical decision-making on all aspects of the Federal Reserve’s stress testing program. These aspects include the development of the overall stress testing framework, supervisory model development, scenario design, data collection, and disclosure of results.
Rulemaking and policy initiatives related to the stress test.
Communication to external policymakers, regulators, and academics regarding stress testing at the Federal Reserve.
An active research agenda related to banking and finance that enhances our credibility and supports our objectives.
