The Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne (EWI) is an independent research institute associated with the University of Cologne, fully owned by Kölner Universitätsstiftung (KUS), and funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. As a member of the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft, it aims at creating, disseminating and utilizing new and relevant knowledge about increasingly complex energy markets.

The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest Universities in Germany. We are seeking to hire an outstanding individual as a Director of the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) who will also take on responsibility for teaching and research in the field of "Economics of Sustainable Energy“. The professorship will operate at the interface between EWI and the relevant activities of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences, in particular the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute, the Excellence Center for Social and Economic Behavior (C-SEB) and the Key Research Initiative “Sustainable and Smart Energy & Mobility (SSEM)”.

Your Tasks
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research, teaching and academic management of EWI. The tasks of the professorship include the training of students and doctoral candidates in the field of Energy Economics. Participation in research activities of EWI and the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences will be expected as well as the successful acquisition and implementation of third-party-funded projects. You should be prepared to contribute to and participate in the Institute’s service events. Moreover, as a Director of EWI, the successful candidate will join the Executive Board of EWI, implying responsibility for leadership as well as external and internal representation of the Institute.

Your Profile
We are seeking an outstanding academic in the field of Energy Economics. The successful candidate will have a track record of high quality research and will be able to contribute excellent teaching, in particular at the graduate level. Moreover, the successful candidate will help to shape EWI’s profile as a leading, and internationally recognized research institute in the energy domain and will broaden the Faculty’s foot-print and activities in the field of sustainable energy. Furthermore, experience with managing and acquiring third-party funds as well as with leading larger teams is appreciated.

The position is available at the earliest possible date. The professorship will be fully funded by EWI and the successful candidate will be granted leave of absence from the University of Cologne (Jülich Model). While the position at EWI can be endowed with tenure depending on the profile, the University of Cologne will appoint the successful candidate for the duration of five years. Towards the end of this term, tenure at the University may be discussed upon a positive evaluation of the candidate and future availability of resources.

Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). The full professorship comprises a teaching load of four hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester).
