Full Text of JOE Listing:

St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Economics position beginning August 2022. The Economics department will consider candidates in any field of economics with a research and teaching focus on Inequality, Equity, and Social Justice. Qualifications include an economics Ph.D. or ABD status in an Economics Ph.D. program (candidates must have the Ph. D. degree in hand or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment) and a record of, or demonstrating promise of, high quality research and collegiate teaching experience. Faculty members teach three courses per semester, advise students, and fulfill service responsibilities. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is desirable.

With the support of the Office of Inclusive Diversity, Equity, Access, and Accountability (IDEA2), St. Mary’s College has designated this position as part of a cluster hire designed to increase the diversity of SMCM faculty. Programs participating in this cluster hire include Anthropology, Biology, Computer Science, Economics, and Psychology. The College seeks to build and support a network of committed scholars whose pedagogical practice—across their diverse fields of specialization—improves the educational experience of underrepresented students. Candidates who demonstrate commitment to and past experience supporting BIPOC, first generation, and low-income students will be given preference. St. Mary’s College is particularly interested in candidates whose teaching is culturally responsive, and grounded in strategies that both increase student belonging and reduce equity gaps in student performance. New faculty in this cluster hire cohort will be supported by research funds up to $5000 in the first two years, paid professional development opportunities, individualized strategic mentoring, campus and community onboarding, and a dedicated steering committee to oversee the long-term success of the initiative and its participants.

To apply, submit a cover letter, CV (including email address), statement of teaching philosophy in which the applicant discusses how their teaching will contribute to an inclusive classroom, evidence of teaching effectiveness, research statement and evidence, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Applications are being accepted online at: apply.interfolio.com/99620. Questions to: Faruk Eray Düzenli at feduzenli@smcm.edu.

Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the positions are filled. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and proof of COVID-19 vaccination, medical and religious exemptions may be considered. SMCM (www.smcm.edu/hr) is an AA/EOE.
