General Overview:
The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is looking for an experienced economist to provide leadership for our world-class Research Division. In this role, you will oversee large research-driven, policy-related initiatives in the Economic Analysis group, provide customer-focused services, meet critical deadlines, and interact with a diverse group of team members, managers and executives. The ability to conduct yourself, with integrity, honesty, and respect for every employee is paramount.

Overview of Responsibilities:
Originate and direct specific research projects on topics of policy relevance, conduct medium to longer term research projects on policy related issues such as national economy, banking and financial services, growth and development of economic regions, or related subject areas. Provide timely and insightful reports to the Bank President and senior officers.

Assist and/or lead monetary policy support by coordinating FOMC policy briefings for the Bank President and attend FOMC meetings as a substitute for the Director of Research.

Act as a consultant in guiding less-experienced staff members on projects and serve as a sounding board to peers.

Analyze and interpret an extensive range of national and regional economic information as a basis for presenting and determining major economic issues and policy alternatives.

Engage effectively with the public; may lead and influence industry and professional organizations outside the System by participating as a speaker, presenter, facilitator, or participant at Bank-sponsored programs or at high quality academic and policy conferences at other research institutions.

Ensure compliance with all applicable department, Bank, and System policies, standards, service and quality measures, procedures, and controls to ensure the highest level of public confidence and operational integrity.

Assist and/or lead Bank or System level positions contributing to System strategic direction and advising senior System decision makers; consider actions within the System that are relevant to the Bank and the Division, and Department officers to develop plans accordingly.

Assist and/or lead department recruiting and hiring of economists. Identify and develop staff with leadership and management potential. Recruit, retain and foster development of staff with an appropriate mix of management, interpersonal, and technical skills.

Understand all authorities established by Bank policy and by the Bank’s Delegation of Authority Schedule and act accordingly. Review Bank policies for areas of responsibility to ensure they remain current; seek interpretation and clarification where necessary. Understand and promote the Bank’s control environment and the importance of compliance.

Provide assistance and/or management oversight, and support to the Research Division to ensure management and staff understand and meet budget, productivity, service, and quality goals.

Participate with Research management and other staff in planning the direction and emphasis of research activities and Division strategy, in determining the relevance and potential value of project proposals submitted, and in constructive review of specific research projects in progress or completed.

Conduct independent research.

The position is also responsible for other specific duties and responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.


Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in Economics.

For appointment as a senior research economist, five or more years of post-Ph.D. experience, or rank of associate professor with tenure with very high research activity.

For appointment as an officer, ten or more years of relevant leadership experience in an academic or business environment, as evidenced by an established record of achievement including managing people and budgets. Significant experience with policy research preferred.

Excellent communication skills, effective presentation and persuasion capabilities, and management presence that elicits confidence and credibility.

Demonstrated strategic and critical thinker with the analytical skills necessary to evaluate, organize, and direct complex research projects and programs. Ability to identify key strategic issues affecting areas of responsibility and demonstrate an understanding of their implications.

Excellent interpersonal, leadership and negotiation skills.

Excellent judgment when deciding which issues to resolve directly and which require senior management attention.

Experience fostering and promoting a diverse and inclusive work environment. Empowers staff at all levels in the Division to reach their full potential.
