Academic Unit Head, Department of Economics

James Madison University’s Department of Economics invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head. The Department of Economics is an academic unit of the College of Business and has 20 full-time faculty members, over 250 majors (across BA, BS, and BBA degree programs) and 40 students in the minor. In addition, the Department supports the College by providing core business classes in microeconomics and macroeconomics in the core business program as well as the university’s general education program. The Department fosters students’ understanding of economic perspectives and their intersection with other social sciences and current events. The department is committed to the intuitional core value of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our faculty members are dedicated to effective teaching, high-quality scholarship, and outreach to the local community.

Duties and Responsibilities
The AUH is expected to assume traditional administrative and operational responsibilities such as preparing schedules, providing faculty support and leadership, serving as a liaison between senior leadership and the department, identifying and advocating for departmental resources, performing faculty evaluations, developing a departmental strategy for curriculum, alumni engagement, and student success, and supporting the institution’s commitment to diversity. This is a twelve-month administrative position, not a rotating chair. The AUH is expected to teach half time as negotiated with the dean.

Applicants must have sufficient teaching, research, and service credentials to qualify for tenure in the Department of Economics at James Madison University. Previous experience as a department chair or some other significant academic leadership experience is beneficial. The candidate will be expected to promote diversity, access and inclusion among students, faculty and staff. The position requires strong communication skills, the capacity to manage multiple competing priorities, and the ability to build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders.
