The University of Miami Department of Geography and Sustainable Development invites applications from qualified individuals for a tenure track or tenure eligible position in Sustainability Economics, beginning August 15, 2022. Rank is open (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor); salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidates must have a PhD in geography, economics or a closely-related interdisciplinary field (such as sustainable development) by August 15, 2022.

Research: We seek an outstanding scholar with an emerging track record of research in leading academic outlets, especially in one of the following areas: Geography (with possible emphasis on such subfields as economic development and economic geography), Economics, and Sustainable Development. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an impactful program of research relevant to broad societal, economic, and business issues and to communicate results to policymakers and practitioners.

Research experience in one of the geographic areas in which the Department already has some expertise (tropical regions in Latin America, Africa, and Asia) as well as strong methodological and quantitative skills are desirable.

Teaching: Excellent teaching skills are a must. Candidates are expected to teach introductory courses in Global Economics and advanced economics courses for non-economics majors in areas such as Geography, International Studies, and Ecosystem Science and Policy. The Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy interacts in significant ways with the Department of Geography and Sustainable Development.

Service: The successful candidate will be willing to participate in service activities at all levels of the university. Ability to interact with policymakers, particularly in the local community, is also viewed positively.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and highly innovative team in the Department of Geography and Sustainable Development (https://geography.as.miami.edu/). The Department is a diverse and innovative global center for geographical, sustainability and resilience research that conducts policy-relevant research to help improve global human well-being. The Department of Geography and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the School of Architecture, offers a new MPS in Urban Sustainability and Resilience as well as several majors and minors in the College of Arts and Sciences.
