The Department of Economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position in agricultural economics at the assistant professor level. The person who fills this position will hold the Iowa Institute for Cooperatives Endowed Economics Professorship. The individual in this position is expected to develop a nationally recognized extension and research program in the economics of the agribusiness sector and agricultural value chains, with an emphasis on cooperatives and related organizations. The approximate split for this position is 50% extension, 30% research, 15% teaching, and 5% institutional service. Areas of extension and research activities might include: finance and equity structures of agribusiness firms; regulation and taxation of the various entities within ag value chains; the role of cooperatives in the evolving industrial organization of agricultural markets; vertical integration; innovation and product development; ownership, control rights and governance structures along agricultural value chains; and/or risks and risk sharing arrangements in commodity markets.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (a) carry out original research, related to the economics embedded in the physical and financial transactions along agricultural value chains, including grant‐seeking efforts and publications in leading peer‐reviewed journals; (b) develop a significant extension program targeted at educating the citizenry on the factors that shape the evolution of ag value chains and the business structures employed to derive those values; (c) work closely with cooperatives in the state to address emerging and ongoing issues through research and extension and (d) teach one undergraduate course per year. Opportunities will exist to direct graduate students’ research and to collaborate in research and extension activities with colleagues in affiliated centers, such as the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) and the Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation (CALT).
The Department of Economics, with approximately 40 faculty, has a long tradition of excellence in education, research, and engagement with the community. Our undergraduate program is the academic home to more than 500 students in three different majors. Our graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in economics and agricultural economics, and places graduates in vital positions in academia, government, and industry throughout the world. Faculty research covers a broad spectrum ranging from theoretical analyses to applied policy studies, and increasingly including multidisciplinary work conducted in collaboration with experts in many other fields.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Economics, Agricultural Economics or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong training in microeconomics and quantitative methods
Research interests in one or more of the following fields: industrial organization; business economics; agricultural marketing; and/or agricultural finance.
Demonstrated ability to communicate economic ideas in public forums
Demonstrated potential for accomplishment in college teaching
Demonstrated potential for accomplishment in research
Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion as described in a statement of diversity and inclusion efforts
