The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking Financial Economic Fellows for the Office of Litigation Economics in the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). Candidates should have interest and experience in corporate finance and accounting (valuation, financial accounting, and disclosure).

Job Description: Financial Economic Fellows at the Commission provide economic guidance and research expertise to a broad range of activities, including rulemakings, enforcement actions, market risk assessments, and other regulatory initiatives. Opportunities exist within DERA to work on its enforcement and litigation support function. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge of applied economics or econometrics in support of the agency’s mission to protect investors, facilitate capital formation, and ensure fair and orderly markets.

This vacancy announcement is for Financial Economic Fellow, which are usually hired on an initial two-year (temporary) appointment that may be extended for up to an additional two years at the agency’s discretion and, if extended, the total fellow position cannot exceed four years. (During their appointment Financial Economic Fellows are not precluded from competing for permanent openings). This position is open only to U.S. citizens.

Qualifications: Applicants must meet both the Education requirements and the Specialized Experience requirements to be eligible for consideration.

• Education: A bachelor’s degree or higher (Ph.D. preferred) from an accredited university or college with a major in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, calculus, or a combination of education and experience including courses equivalent to a major in economics plus appropriate experience and additional education.

• Specialized Experience: The candidate’s resume must reflect demonstrated experience in the application of economics. This experience may be demonstrated in several ways, such as: (a) experience drafting reports analyzing the economics of securities litigation that have been submitted in federal courts or in the context of an SEC action, including the quantification of either harm to investors or ill-gotten gains; (b) success in conducting research that is of comparable quality to peer-reviewed finance and economics journals; (c) experience in designing and executing empirical economic research that has impact or relevance for our understanding of markets or consumers.
