Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation (the “JCT”) has an opening for a quantitative economist. Economists at the Joint Committee work with an experienced inter-disciplinary staff of attorneys and accountants to participate in the tax legislative process and influence the nation’s tax laws. These economists apply their academic training and skills to tax policy in a nonpartisan role, assisting both majority and minority parties in the House and Senate with legislative proposals. For more information on the work of the JCT, see www.jct.gov.

Quantitative economists at the Joint Committee analyze both large and small data sets to formulate estimates of the Federal budget impact of proposed Federal tax legislation and to analyze the possible economic and administrative implications of proposed changes in Federal tax laws. These tax laws cover a broad array of economic activities and industries, including, for example, labor decisions, financial planning, education, transportation, the environment, international trade, and health care. Strong technical and analytical skills are valuable. The position is ideal for those with an interest in public policy, tax, and collaborative work. You will work in an informal team environment with other economists, lawyers, and accountants to analyze tax legislation. You will also keep up-to-date with the economics literature, and have the opportunity to write research papers.

These are exciting and challenging positions for economists who have an interest in tax policy. Your work will be reflected immediately in tax legislation considered by the Congress. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen and have a Ph.D. or equivalent, with training in public finance and taxation preferred. Our economists start at the Joint Committee with a variety of experience; some come straight from graduate programs while others come with experience in government, industry, and academia. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
